Renewing without an unnecessary journey

The Contactless Biometric Passport Application System extends remote renewal to eligible Nigerians in supported locations. It is especially relevant to citizens abroad who would otherwise have to travel to a diplomatic mission for parts of the renewal process. Digital submission and biometric checks form part of the service, with eligibility controls retained.

In September 2025, the Nigeria Immigration Service confirmed that the system was processing passports for Nigerians overseas. It also acknowledged technical difficulties and described work to improve the payment gateway and address application problems. That account establishes an operational service while recognising the reliability issues some applicants experienced.

Using the correct route

Contactless renewal is a specific application channel, rather than a replacement for every passport procedure. First applications, changes of personal data and other cases may require different checks. Applicants should confirm their eligibility and supported location before beginning.

The service is intended to reduce the cost and inconvenience of accessing government from abroad. Its performance is best assessed through completed applications and service reliability, not simply the availability of an app.
