e-Visa, e-Gates and Digital Border Services
Digital immigration services bring e-visa and automated landing and exit cards into the travel process.
operationalDigital immigration services bring e-visa and automated landing and exit cards into the travel process.
Alongside airport e-gates, these systems form part of the border-modernisation agenda. Their value is clearer passenger processing supported by immigration checks.
The official implementation notice governs requirements. This page does not claim every airport or traveller category uses the same process.
Modernising entry and exit processes
Electronic visa applications and automated border controls address different stages of an international journey. The visa system concerns permission to travel and enter under the relevant category. Electronic gates support passenger processing at equipped border facilities, subject to identity and security checks.
The Immigration Service has also introduced electronic landing and exit documentation as part of its digital migration processes. Together, these services are intended to make passenger information available earlier and reduce reliance on manual paperwork. They support administrative efficiency while retaining the responsibility of immigration officers to make entry decisions.
Rollout and passenger experience
Availability depends on the traveller’s nationality, document, visa category and point of entry. An electronic application does not amount to automatic approval, and a gate installation does not establish that every passenger can use it.
For visitors and returning citizens, the intended benefit is a clearer and more efficient journey through the applicable process. This record describes the modernisation programme; it does not claim universal airport coverage, guaranteed clearance times or the removal of immigration requirements.
