Local Government Financial Autonomy

The Tinubu administration secured a landmark Supreme Court judgment in July 2024 affirming the financial autonomy of Nigeria's local governments.

The Federal Government took the matter to court, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed the decision as a major step towards effective governance at the grassroots. The Presidency has since called on all stakeholders to implement it fully.

Strengthening local democratic administration

The Supreme Court judgment affirmed the constitutional position of local governments and their right to the resources allocated to them. For years, many councils were starved of funds and unable to perform their constitutional duties.

Local government is closest to the everyday needs of Nigerians: primary healthcare, basic education, local roads, markets and sanitation. A secure financial footing lets councils plan, deliver and answer to their communities.

Driving implementation

The Federal Government initiated the case and continues to champion its implementation. President Tinubu has publicly called on governors to respect the judgment and allow councils to manage their own resources. Implementation across the federation is an active priority of the administration.

Accountability closer to the people

Financial autonomy lets communities hold elected local officials directly responsible for how resources are used.

With autonomy come the duties of lawful spending, transparent management and democratic scrutiny. By securing this judgment, the Tinubu administration has returned power and resources to the grassroots, where they can make the greatest difference in people's lives.
