Rehabilitation and expansion

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport project concerns the rehabilitation and expansion of international terminal infrastructure in Lagos. FAAN’s project information distinguishes the older terminal from the newer terminal and explains why work must be organised around a functioning international airport.

The programme addresses the passenger environment and the airport systems that support international travel. A terminal upgrade involves operational planning as well as construction: airlines, border agencies, ground handlers and passengers need clear arrangements while facilities are changed.

Managing work at an operating airport

The official project guidance is the appropriate place to check terminal arrangements, phased works and operational notices. A construction programme at an airport does not mean all flights have stopped, nor does an approval establish that the refurbished facility has already opened.

The record therefore identifies the project as work in delivery. Its final benefits depend on the commissioning of the relevant facilities and their performance in daily operation.

Public and economic purpose

Lagos is a major gateway for passenger travel and business connections. Modernising the airport is intended to improve the quality and capacity of that gateway, with the passenger journey, safety, reliability and coordination of services central to the outcome.
