Oncology and Diagnostic Centres

Oncology and diagnostic investment is expanding the infrastructure for specialist treatment.

The NSIA-backed programme addresses access to cancer care and diagnosis within Nigeria. Its significance is the prospect of more treatment capacity for patients and families facing difficult journeys.

The programme includes facilities at different stages. An announced expansion is not a claim that every planned centre is operating.

Specialist care within Nigeria

The NSIA Healthcare Expansion Programme develops oncology and diagnostic services through a network of specialist facilities. The administration launched the expansion in Bauchi in August 2024, alongside an initiative to retrain frontline health workers.

The programme builds on earlier NSIA-supported facilities at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Kano and Umuahia. The expansion is implemented through NSIA’s healthcare subsidiary, Medserve, and sits alongside investment in cancer infrastructure at federal teaching hospitals.

Treatment, diagnosis and clinical capacity

Oncology facilities address cancer care, while diagnostic services help clinicians investigate and monitor disease. The expansion also envisages a role in professional training and research. These elements are intended to strengthen access to specialist services within the country rather than leave patients dependent on travelling overseas.

Delivery stage matters

The launch described facilities to be established and capacity to be developed. It was not a commissioning of every proposed centre. This page therefore treats the expansion as a programme in delivery; an individual centre should receive a completed or operational label only when a facility-specific milestone supports it.

The public significance lies in bringing specialist capability closer to patients. Access in practice still depends on the centre’s operational status, clinical services, referral requirements and arrangements for the cost of care.
