Passport Service Modernisation

Passport modernisation brings digital application and renewal routes into a service used by Nigerians at home and abroad.

Passport modernisation brings digital application and renewal routes into a service used by Nigerians at home and abroad.

The reform agenda addresses application processes and citizen access. Applicants should use the Immigration Service’s official guidance to check the route available for their location.

Service availability and processing requirements vary. No universal turnaround time is promised.

A more accessible public service

The passport service combines online applications and payments with identity verification and document processing. Fresh applications, renewals and changes to personal information follow different procedures. For citizens, the practical improvement is a clearer route through these stages, with less dependence on intermediaries and better visibility of the information required.

Modernisation also builds on passport infrastructure introduced before this administration. The current reform effort should be understood as improving service delivery and extending digital access, rather than inventing the Nigerian electronic passport.

What applicants can expect

The standard application route still includes an appointment for photograph and biometric capture where required. Nigerians abroad use the arrangements available through the relevant mission or an eligible contactless service. A digital application does not remove the requirement to establish identity or provide supporting documents.

The public value lies in making an essential citizen service more predictable. Available channels, eligibility and processing arrangements remain matters for the Immigration Service, and can differ by location and application type.
