Primary healthcare renewal strengthens the facilities where many Nigerians first seek treatment.

The health programme combines revitalisation with support for frontline services. Better local facilities can help families obtain care earlier and reduce pressure on distant referral hospitals.

Revitalisation and completed facilities are different milestones. This record does not combine planned upgrades with finished centres.

Community-level care

Primary health centres are the everyday point of contact between many communities and the health system. The renewal programme addresses facilities, basic services and the conditions in which frontline health workers provide care. It forms part of the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative and related implementation partnerships.

Named facilities in the delivery record

The May 2026 health commissioning programme included Gadon Kaya Primary Health Centre in Gwale, Kano State, and Aboh Primary Health Centre in Ndokwa East, Delta State. Both were identified with the World Bank-supported IMPACT programme. The programme supports immunisation and malaria services alongside broader improvements to primary healthcare delivery.

These named examples show how a national initiative reaches specific places. They should be distinguished from the overall revitalisation programme, which covers facilities at different stages of work.

From buildings to services

A renovated building is an important delivery milestone, but effective care also depends on staffing, equipment, supplies, referral arrangements and continued operation. The wider policy objective is to make basic services more accessible and strengthen the path from community care to hospitals when more specialised treatment is needed.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and participating state institutions have complementary responsibilities. This record separates completed examples from the continuing national programme.
